Miami Spring Cleaning Tips

March 13, 2017

Spring is finally in the air, Miami! If you’ve spent winter huddled inside, now’s a great opportunity to open those windows and start thinking about spring cleaning. You might have your typical spring cleaning checklist, but all too frequently homeowners can skip over a few important details.

These are our tips to get the most out of your spring cleaning from your floors to your shutters, so you can enjoy our favorite season in Miami.

Clean Your Windows For Spring

Spring Cleaning Tips Miami

It’s normal to get up in mid-March and realize that the lousy view out your window isn’t due to winter weather–it’s due to a filthy window. Spring is a great opportunity to deep clean your windows. Get that beautiful view back with these steps.

  • If the window opens, open it all the way and clean out any dirt and dust in the sill or track. Try first to remove as much as possible with the track dry, then use warm soapy water and a cloth or brush to clean out the rest. This will help your window open and close easier, and make sure your window can shut completely.

  • Spray the glass with a cleaning solution. You can use either a store-bought chemical cleaner, or create your own at home using one part vinegar and two parts warm water.

  • Wipe the windows with a microfiber cloth. These cloths are best for cleaning glass and leave fewer streaks.

Don’t Forget to Clean those Window Treatments

A clean glass window is no good if the window treatment isn’t similarly clean.

For fabric window treatments such as drapes or curtains, cleaning can be troublesome. For thick fabric treatments, remove them from the wall and shake them outdoors to get rid of any loose debris, then pop them in the washer on a cold cycle and air dry them. For thinner window treatments, you’ll need to be more delicate in how you handle them, so hand-wash them in a sink or tub.

Plantation shutters are probably the simplest window treatment when it comes to cleaning. Get rid of dust by wiping down with a microfiber cloth or barely damp rag. To spot clean, wipe with a slightly wet cloth to get rid of the stain, then dry with a cloth.

Pay Attention to Your Appliances

Your refrigerator, stove and washing machine are just as much furniture as appliances. Especially with newer appliances such as those made of stainless steel, looks can be equally as important as functionality. Clean all the nooks and crannies of your appliances, and make them look stunning again.

Stainless steel appliances can be shined up using a solution made of 1 tsp. dish soap and 1 qt. of warm water, applied with a damp cloth and air-dried.

Get Every Single Surface

You’re probably going to give your floors and walls some needed attention when you do your spring cleaning, but remember to spread some love around to some of those often neglected surfaces. These are just a few of the spots that are often neglected when doing your spring cleaning:

  • All knobs or handles that are often touched. This could be on the toilet, on electronics, or any other spot in your home.

  • All surfaces in your shower, like the door, base, and soap ledge.

  • The tops of your ceiling fan blades.

  • Under your appliances - especially the big appliances like the fridge164 and dishwasher.
