What Happens At Your In-Home Shutter Consultation

David White

To help you decide on the perfect window treatments for your windows, some companies, like Sunburst, start out with an in-home consultation. By bringing products to your home, we can demonstate how different shutters, blinds, and shades would match up to your windows. You’ll find how easy it is to find the best window treatment when you aren’t in the sterile showroom.

But what exactly happens during an in-home consultation? And how will showing you different products at your home help you better choose the perfect window treatment? Every shutter and window treatment company may have a different agenda for their in-home consultation, but here is what you will find during your Sunburst visit.

Stepping Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

A couple viewing samples of window treatments.

Begin by scheduling an appointment by contacting your local representative. If you already have a shutter or window treatment in mind, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make a special note to bring you different options available for your preferred treatment. We will also bring other options, so you can feel confident that your choice matches your vision.

During the actual appointment, we’ll sit down and discuss what you want in a window treatment. We’ll cover issues like your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency ideas, and we’ll ask about hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your rep will also want to know how your windows are used and what style you are trying to accomplish. And it’s alright if you don’t know exactly what you need, as we’ll explain all your options.

You may have to see many different samples and compare each product against each other. Most customers need to try out a few different product lines, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or finding the best stain to coordinate with the room. We’ll also demonstrate all the options available for the treatment, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

Once a decision is made, we’ll take percise measurements of your windows. We generally measure the windows in each room—even if you only need to fit treatments for some of your windows. We get multiple measurements because a lot of our customers ask to be able to order future window treatments without another consultation. Before we leave, we will thoroughly explain the detailed, written quote, so there are no hidden costs on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Subpar In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are convinced that Sunburst will perform compentent in-home consultation, there are some red flags you should never see from any window treatment company. It should go without saying, the quality of your sales representative reflects the quality of the product.

Primarily, your rep should respect your home. He or she should come to your house on time, clean and presentable, and offer to prevent floor scuffs with shoe booties. Your consultant should always have product and company literature and pricing information.

In regards to pricing, you should be given a detailed written quote. Don’t accept a vague guess, scrawled on a scrap piece of paper or the back of a business card. And don’t take pricing estimates without window measurement. You need to understand how much you should pay and why. If you haven’t already, look up references and online reviews as you get ready to order.
