What To Expect At Your Miami In-Home Shutter Consultation

March 26, 2019

To help you decide on the perfect window treatments for your house, some companies, like Sunburst, start out with an in-home consultation. By bringing products to your home, we can demonstate how various window coverings would match up to your windows. You’ll see how simple it is to find the perfect treatments when you aren’t in the sterile showroom.

But what exactly happens during an in-home consultation? And how will bringing samples to your home allow you to better choose the perfect window treatment? Every shutter and window treatment company may have a different agenda for their in-home consultation, but here is what you will get during your Sunburst visit.

Walking Through A Typical In-Home Shutters Consultation

A couple choosing between samples of window treatments.

Begin by scheduling an appointment by contacting your local representative. If you already know what window covering you want, like our Polywood® plantation shutter, then we will make a special note to bring you different options for your preferred treatment. We will also bring additional treatments, so you can be sure that your choice matches your vision.

During the actual appointment, we’ll sit down and discuss what you want in a window treatment. We’ll look at your lighting, privacy, and energy efficiency ideas, and we’ll ask about hard-to-reach or specialty-shaped windows. Your rep will also ask about how your windows are used and what aesthetic you are trying to acheive. The end target is to fully envision what your decor will ultimately look like with the treatments installed.

You may have to see many different products and compare each window treatment against each other. Most customers want to look at a few different product lines, like comparing Polywood with our real-wood Ovation® shutters or choosing the best stain to coordinate with the walls. We’ll also demonstrate all the options available for the covering, like available colors, louver sizes, or hidden tilt-rods.

Once a decision is made, we’ll take percise measurements of your windows. We generally measure the windows in each room—even if you only plan to fit treatments for some of your windows. We get multiple measurements because a lot of our customers ask to order future shutters or blinds without another consultation. Finally, we will thoroughly explain the detailed, written quote, so there are no surprises on your invoice.

Red Flags For A Subpar In-Home Shutter Consultation

While we are convinced that Sunburst will perform compentent in-home consultation, there are some things you should never see from any window treatment company. It should go without saying, the quality of the consultation usually equals the quality of the product.

Primarily, your rep should respect your home. They should arrive on time, with all samples requested, and offer to prevent floor scuffs with shoe booties. Your consultant should always have product and company brochures and pricing information.

When it comes to price, you should be given a full written quote. Don’t accept a vague guess, scrawled on a product brochure or the back of a business card. And don’t take pricing estimates if they won’t measure your windows. You should always know how much you should pay and why. Also, check references and online reviews as you get ready to order.
